Help & FAQs

About the card

What is a Premium Prepaid MasterCard®?

It’s not a credit card, charge card or debit card, although you use it in exactly the same way to shop online, over the phone and in stores.

It’s a prepaid MasterCard, which means you load money onto the card before you shop. When your funds are running low, you simply top up again.

You don’t have to have a bank account to own a Premium Prepaid MasterCard, and there are no credit checks.

What are the Benefits for Premium Prepaid MasterCard cardholders?

A Premium Prepaid MasterCard is ideal for having your wages paid directly on to the card account, shopping online, by phone or mail order if you don't have, can't get, or don't want a credit card.

It's also handy for travelling, as it's safer than carrying cash. And if you've got family members travelling or living abroad, it's easy to top them up from home to keep them going. Plus it's a great alternative to old-fashioned pocket money.

You don't need a bank account to get one, and it's great for keeping a lid on temptation, as you can never spend more than you've got. It also has PIN and fraud protection like a credit card*, and is accepted wherever you see the MasterCard Acceptance Mark.

* Although it's like a credit card, a prepaid MasterCard doesn't offer the additional card protection on purchases that credit cards offer.

How is the Premium Prepaid MasterCard different from a debit card and a credit card?

Premium Prepaid MasterCard is not a debit or credit card. There is no credit check so even if you have a poor credit history you can still get a card. When you use your Premium Prepaid MasterCard, you are spending money you have already topped up onto your Premium Prepaid MasterCard, meaning all your purchases are paid for. The Premium Prepaid MasterCard is a payment card that works like a pay as you go phone – you need to put money on it before you can use it. When you use a debit card, you are using money linked to a bank account and when you use a credit card you buy now and pay later. With a Premium Prepaid MasterCard you only spend the money you have loaded on your card.

Where can I use my Premium Prepaid MasterCard?

You can use your Premium Prepaid MasterCard at over 28 million retail outlets and cash machine locations worldwide, wherever the MasterCard Acceptance Mark is displayed.

Is my cash secure?

Yes - Premium Prepaid MasterCard is Chip and PIN protected for added security. You will receive a Personal Identification Number (PIN) which you use with your Premium Prepaid MasterCard to get cash from any cash machine displaying the MasterCard Acceptance Mark or to purchase goods or services at merchants. For your peace of mind, your money is held safely at Barclays Bank Plc. If you lose your card - your funds, PIN and the card itself will be replaced in accordance with the Terms and Conditions.

Do I receive a statement?

To help the planet, we don't send out monthly printed statements but if you would like a statement posted to you, just give us a call on 0845 505 8880. Please note, there’s a fee of £5.00 for each statement you request, charged to your Prepaid Card.

Don’t forget though, you can check your statements and print them off for free anytime online, when you enrol for online service. Just click on ‘My Account’ at the top right of the screen.

What does ‘for electronic use only’ mean?

You will notice your new card has ‘for electronic use only’ written on the bottom right hand corner. This doesn't affect using it online, over the phone or at a cash machine. It simply means that when you are out shopping it can only be used in the normal electronic terminals you find in the UK and elsewhere.
The card can’t be used in the older manual sliding style of card machines, as it doesn’t feature raised numbers. And you may find you can't use it on a plane or a train as there may not be an electronic connection available.
